Međugorje

Međugorje is currently one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. After the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on June 24, 1981, this location became a pilgrimage site for pilgrims from all over the world. The key message of Međugorje is peace.

Every pilgrim visits regularly the St. James Parish Church, the Apparition Hill, the Cross Mountain, the Garden of St. Francis and Canacolo. The most important events throughout the year are: the anniversary of the Apparition, the Youth Festival, the celebration of the Assumption of Mary, the mass on the Cross Mountain, the celebration of Easter, Christmas and New Year's Eve. Number of visitors per year: 500 000

In addition to the anniversary of the Apparition, the periods of most numerous visits of believers are during Easter, when the anniversary of the first Apparition is celebrated by a procession called the ''Walk of Peace'', the Assumption of Mary (August 15), and the Birth of the Virgin (the first Sunday after September 8). The Church of St. James, built in 1969, is the venue of different religious events, and behind it there is a path leading to the Risen Redeemer, a statue with holy water dripping continuously from it. ''Via Crucis'' is a stopping point located on the path to the Apparition Hill where the pilgrims stop to pray.
